5 out of 5 stars Wake Up Children   September 5, 2010
Curmudgeon Lee (backwater, UK)
I was a bit like whooa no way when I heard the first track cos it sounds a bit like Coldplay and he sings high and I thought no don't go there man, but wherever he's gone to and returned from has imbued this Win Butler guy with a fantastic ability to put something so special and mesmeric into his lyrics, they are so evocative and take you right to the root of what's up with our culture of alienation where everything's commodified - even the attitude of the modern kids in Rococo. And that's possibly THE recurrent theme of the album or at least one of the threads. This guy is on the money! Even tunes that don't instantly soar away to heaven like City With No Children In become intriguing and interesting because of his lyrical weavings. I'd buy this album anyway for the aforesaid City With No Children In because it's one of the most gorgeous songs I've ever heard. And I've heard quite a lot because I'm an old fart and I've heard far too much cack. This is a beautiful gem in a sea of b*llocks, but never mind them, buy this instead.

And listen hard kids, you could learn something useful!

5 out of 5 stars Arcade on Fire   September 5, 2010

Arcade Fire just get better and better. A must buy album. Just like the previous albums before, each track is strong. It was well worth the wait between 'Neon Bible' and this one.

Unsure at first, but it's a grower. Not as dramatic as Neon Bible. Reading the lyrics is tricky (Why not just type them, the scrawl is a challenge!)But I enjoyed the songs more once I understood them. Can't wait to see them on tour.

4 out of 5 stars JA's review of the suburbs   September 4, 2010

Superb not as dark as neon bible but the big sound is still there , they are one of my favourite bands of the last few years and this hasn't altered my opinion at all.

3 out of 5 stars Arcade Not So Firey   September 4, 2010
Muso (Scotland)
I have listened to this album on several occasions now in the hope that it might spark into life but so far it hasn't really. I think the problem is that I will always be comparing it to 'Funerals' or 'Neon Bible'. These albums were amazing albums that immediately struck a chord and draw into them but The Suburbs just doesn't so that. Unfortunately, I feel that I kind of drift away from listening to it. There are a few reasons for this. It's a very long album and I don't think there are enough stand out tracks to keep you engrossed.

This is not to say they are bad songs! There are quite a few killers but a good few fillers as well. Stand out tracks are 'The Suburbs', 'Modern Man','Rococo' and 'Month of May'.

The storytelling in each song is still typically Arcade Fire but I get the feeling I won't be listening to this album as much as the others.

All in, I don't think this is a bad album just not as good as 'Funerals' or 'Neon Bible'.
