Great Book! September 4, 2010 Lotty (Wigan, England) Another great book by the author of the Twilight saga. I wasn't sure how this would compare without the characters we all know but this draws you in from the first page. Stephenie Meyer can write about things other than vampires! Well worth buying.
Worth a read September 1, 2010 Blackberry52 I decided to buy this book after being well and truly 'Twilighted' having spent a whole fortnight full of the Twilight books and films. I needed a new direction but didn't want to go back to my traditional reads (Jill Mansell and Sophie Kinsella books), predictable happy-ending novels didn't seem to cut it anymore! The natural progression seemed to be to read this book, so I gave it a go.
I'm pleased I did as The Host was exactly what I didn't know I was looking for. It's not the usual sort of book I read and it's so refreshing to find a new genre to enjoy. It isn't as initially gripping as Twilight and I did have to make a concerted effort to keep reading at times but I'm glad I did - once I got a third of the way through I was totally hooked into Meyer's weird and wonderful world of aliens and I even managed to cry at the end.
Overall a brilliant book which I'm hoping will translate into an equally brilliant film!!
Exceptional and unique August 26, 2010 Jacqui After negative preconceptions of this novel (being whole-heartedly opposed to the science fiction genre), I can't believe I ever doubted Meyer's latest creation!
Slow at first, this novel gains fast momentum, hurtling through drama, action, romance and suspense. The rich description of all the varying emotions leaves you empathic to Meyer's vivid and absorbing characters (and keeps me crying through the later chapters!). You find a genuine sympathy to characters that, rationally, you shouldn't, this novel challenges my opinion and perceptions in many ways.
This is truly, without any doubt, one of the greatest and most enjoyable books I've ever read.
The Host August 19, 2010 Xenia Stephanie Meyer's wondrous tale about the life changing meeting between the girl Melanie, and the soul, Wanda. They both have to come to terms with the perplexing destiny, that they now share and find a way to co-exist. They're strangers, but the love for the same guy unites and binds them together.
Move over Twilight August 18, 2010 A. Pullan (England) The book: Discard everything you think and know about Stephenie Meyer and the Twilight Saga. This moves way out of the realm of those books. Whether you love them or hate them this is something completely new.
The Host is without a doubt my favourite book, and I'm more shocked about that than anyone. Stephenie Meyer is a completely different author in this book. She has a unique and compelling style that you don't even get a glipse of in Twilight. I personally enjoy her vampire series, and I hate sci-fi books. I'm a huge fan of sci-fi tv, but not books, so I never thought I'd love this book, but it is breathtaking. It's some of the best writing I've ever seen, it's complex, compelling and unique. The novel is a thick long story and you're easily sucked into the characters emotions and problems. I personally hope Stephenie carries on with this writing style because it is so strong and capturing that it'll be a horrible shame if she doesn't go back to it. I can't believe this was her first book.
The story: This novel follows a young woman, Mel, who is taken over by an alien creature that inhabits her body and lives on Earth. The human race has fallen and very few remain, those that do fight as a resistance against the aliens that have taken over their bodies and planet. However the alien race are not evil as we usually see in sci-fi novels. No, they are an advanced race that travel the universe hoping to rebuild civilisations with a better way of life and restoring planets to the natural health. They inhabit the human and quieten the humans subconcious until they are the soul inhabitors of the body. However Mel refuses to go and so the alien and her must survive in the same body. They seek out someone Mel knows and must find and in the process of it they are taken in by humans and Mel/alien must learn to live with them in harmony, then things go disasterously wrong...
This book is truely breathtaking and no one should judge it based on the Twilight saga. It is in no way the same, nothing about it is at all. You will love this book and totally change your view on Stephenie Meyer. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. It's certainly worth the money.
