Give it time... July 17, 2010 madaboutbooks Started off so slowly I nearly gave up! So glad I didn't though - this was absolutely brilliant, although a little confusing at times with all the jumping backwards and forwards through time. The ending is amazing, especially when you realise what's about to happen.
Hard work but worth it July 16, 2010 Squeak Found it very confusing at times & I have to admit I did have my friend, who had already read it, encouraging me to stick with it & i'm glad I did. Some really emotional parts that I just sobbed at. I point blank refuse to watch the film as I dont think it could possibly do the book any justice. Not the type of book i'd normally read but was excellent.
A MUST READ July 12, 2010 T. Fennelly (Leeds UK) loved the book good read from begining to end, you will not be able to put down.
Now for the film
Voiceless characters July 11, 2010 Words for Life (Copenhagen, Denmark) I looked forward to reading this book, based on the fantastic reviews I had seen for it. The Time Traveler's Wife has a wonderful and fascinating plot, but her characters simply had no voices!
I frequently found myself having to re-read dialogues to figure out which of the characters had said what. At first, I blamed myself, thinking my mind must have been wandering ("Cannot be the author's fault - must be mine," said my guilt.) But I quickly came to realize that the characters had no tangible personalities and, therefore, no unique voices. The way in which the main characters spoke on the written page could just as well have been words uttered by the time traveler or his wife.
It was as though I was reading a bad translation of a very good book. You know the kind: one in which the translator has been faithful to the meaning of the words but has not translated the author's style and voices, which leaves you with a dry, unsatisfying collection of words.
Dissapointing. So disappointing.
So, I know I'm a voice against the crowd here, but I cannot give the book more than two stars - and those are for the plot. It's a rare book that would perform better on the screen than on the page!
Must read July 9, 2010 Anne Le Chem I wanted a holiday book and The Time Traveler's Wife was recommended as their favourite ever read by two friends. It will certainly be in my top 10.
